Ceremonial Start Photos 3
Dee Dee Jonrowe, an Alaskan who was born in Germany, pets all her dogs and hugs all the Iditarod volunteers. She is wearing a traditional coastal Eskimo "kuspuk" in bright pink. The native women wear these brightly colored dresses over their "skin" parkas to protect them and add a little color to their outfits. Dee Dee wears the kuspuk to honor the cultural heritage of native Alaskans.
