Wind Chill

The big story in Anchorage is not how do the mushers and dogs survive out on the trail in the below zero weather, but how are the Iditarod spectators going to survive on Saturday for the Ceremonial Start. The temperature has been 10-12 degrees F., but the winds have been brutal, with gusts up to 35 mph. The strategy here is not so much dressing in layers, but to make sure your clothing doesn't have any holes! You want and need anything to break the wind. My knit gloves and wool knit hat are worthless! You can't forget to protect your eyes from wind-driven grit coming off the streets and sidewalks. There is ice always underfoot. We have seen many Iditarod fans losing their footing and flipping upside down. They are usually OK due to all the padding in their parkas!

Here is a picture of my husband, Terry, picking up a box full of REAL Alaska parkas and windpants that my sister "Gold Streaked" (sent by next available plane) from Fairbanks to Anchorage 350 miles away.
